The youth wing of Belgium’s right-wing nationalist New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) offered to sell the country’s French-speaking region of Wallonia to U.S. President Donald Trump for €1.
Following Wednesday’s news that the U.S. president cancelled his upcoming visit to Denmark because the country was not willing to sell him Greenland, the youth branch of the N-VA, which wants a separate Flemish state, wrote on Twitter: “Dear President, one Euro and Wallonia is yours. Call us.” Trump was tagged in the post but so far hasn’t responded.
“This says it all,” former president of the Belgian Senate Christine Defraigne, from the French-speaking Mouvement Réformateur (MR), told De Morgen, adding with tongue in cheek: “But of course we are talking about young people who are joking, and the party leaders don’t think the same.”
MP Catherine Fonck from the French-speaking Humanist Democratic Centre party (cdH) wrote on Twitter that she felt “sorry” for the young N-VA as “their vision of the future and their vision of society are so sad and selfish.”
